It was the climax for an unforgettable year for supporters of the Fox TV show Firefly, and the movie Serenity. Less than three months after Serenity premiered, most of the crew, plus other special guests, spent a weekend together at the former Airport Hilton near the Burbank Airport. People had fun getting together, seeing a special screening of one of the episodes, and an early cut of of a documentary Done the Impossible, which recalled how a cancelled TV show got a second chance on the silver screen.

Best Con I Ever Had

Best Con I Ever Had

This was an independent event that took place at the former Hilton across from the Burbank airport. It had eight of the nine crew members (Gina Torres couldn't make it) plus some special guests.

Everyone was there, but Nathan was late because he was filming a small film called "Waitress" with Keri Russell. Throughout the con, the cast talked about a lot of things like what they took from the show: Alan got his jumpsuit, Ron got some socks (but wanted part of his Shepherd Book wardrobe), Sean got his boots (but not his vests, so many of them), Nathan got some Alliance cash, a holster and a replica gun (although he claims he got the ship's steering wheel.

They also talked about their days in high school. Alan spent a lot of it skateboarding and wearing a sombrero. Sean spent a lot of time on the stage in between classes. Ron was about to talk about his classes, when Nathan went on and on about how Ron may have had to tie his horse before coming to class with Nellie Olsen (for you Little House fans). Actually, Ron was a bright student living in Indiana, but was worried about the bigger kids.

Nathan said his parents were teachers, which is why he values an education. If not for daytime dramas, Mr. Fillion would be somewhere in Edmonton teaching high school. He says high school teaches one to "play the game", and that a moment of tragedy could be a funny story later. He also talked about preparing for his nude scene in "Trash". He says when a woman has a nude scene, only a few people are allowed. For Nathan, it was half the Fox staff. Hey, he's a rugged guy.

Before "Mad Men", she was "Our Mrs. Reynolds" who was also a major league scam artist who broke a lot of hearts. Here, she's reading the lucky number of a winner of a rare Serenity poster...signed, of course

Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite and Summer Glau were very popular. They talked about what they got from the show. Jewel talked about how she got into acting, while Summer talked about she almost joined a major ballet company until she got into acting. There was also a lot of talk about cooking, and how Jewel and Nathan have a middle-finger feud.

Nathan revealed he almost lost the role of Mal to Neil McDonough, while they were grateful the FCC didn't pick upon the Chinese obscene words said on the show. It was also pointed out Nathan was an evil preacher on Buffy and Adam an evil PR guy on Angel. Imagine a battle between them.

Surprise proposal

Erin Fitzgerald got a proposal from her boyfriend, Thor. She said yes, of course. You should have seen them do "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" at the karaoke. This wouldn't be the last time a proposal would happen at a Firefly convention

Many guests paid 700 bucks for special events, like karaoke with the cast. Others were entertained by Dennis Christopher and Johnathan Woodward talking about things like credit-card debt and movie-making in general. They even showed that bonus DVD from the first version of the complete Buffy DVD set.

Joss Whedon was a surprise guest in the final day of the Flanvention. He got to talk to a friend of a fan after the show was over. Safe to say, he was the perfect ending to one of the best conventions ever.
